Marie Dressler was one of the unlikeliest movie stars of all time, and enjoyed an enormous second act in her career with the arrival of the talkies. She won the Best Actress Oscar for Min and Bill:
She beat out some of the greatest glamour goddesses of all time, including Marlene Dietrich in Morocco:
Norma Shearer in A Free Soul:
Irene Dunne in Cimarron (a far better poster than movie!):
And the largely forgotten Ann Harding in the original version of Holiday:
