Who Should Have Won the Best Actress Oscar for 1936?

My daughter had a reaction to seeing Luise Rainer in The Great Ziegfeld: “…her big bug eyes are creeping me out.” She was thirteen — my daughter, not Ms. Rainer — but I know what she means:

She beat out Irene Dunne in the screwball comedy Theodora Goes Wild:

The next official nominee is Gladys George for Valiant Is the Word for Carrie.

Unfortunately, I was never able to find a copy of this one before publication, but I did manage to see this one:

Carole Lombard was nominated for My Man Godfrey:

Finally, Norma Shearer was nominated for mangling Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet:

The one classic performance the Academy missed was for Jean Arthur in Mr. Deeds Goes to Town:
